Delphinium or Larkspur are tall, cottage and cutting garden perennials that produce strong, showy stems loaded with brilliantly colored flowers that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. They prefer cool, mild summers, and slightly alkaline soil. Staking is recommended, as the flower spikes may topple and break from rain or wind. Plant in a sunny garden, back of the border with other cut flower varieties such as baby's breath, coneflowers, lilies, and Shasta daisies. 'Aurora Deep Purple' is a showy, tall variety producing medium green, palmate leaves and large spikes of semi-double, lavender flowers with a white center or bee from early to late summer. This Delphinium variety is a strong, F1 hybrid that blooms earlier than most, is vigorous, and produces uniform, high quality cut flowers that may require staking. Plant in well-drained, evenly moist, nutrient-rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week, for the first year. Use a slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; apply again in summer after removing spent flower stems to lateral buds. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring every 4 years.
